Name: Talafon Kuku Abu-Jalaha. Born at Al-Buram Locality in the year 1954, the southern rural area of South Kordofan State. Studied the primary, intermediate and secondary school stages and admitted at Al-Talha Agricultural Institute in Gezira State. He then worked as Agricultural Inspector at the Nuba Agricultural Institution
He is married to two wives and father of a number of sons and daughters
He was a founder of Kumalu organization of the Nuba Mountains together with Abdul-Karim Kuku, Yousif Kuwa, Daniel Kodi, Yousif Kara and other. Kumalu organization represented the first nucleus for establishment of the People's Liberation Movement
Talafon Kuku joined Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the year 1984. He was one of four persons of the Nuba Mountains who joined the SPLM (Daniel Kodi, Awadal-Karim Kuku (liquidated by the SPLM), and Yousif Karra) among a group that was composed of at least officers, all of them were liquidated excluding the four persons
He worked as field commander. Before the Naivasha agreement Talafon Kuku was an officer at the rank of Brigadier who was responsible for the supply and logistic support to the SPLM. He was dismissed following his criticism to the SPLM and difference with the SPLM concerning the share of the Nuba Mountains from the Comprehensive Peace Agreement
This issue made the SPLM to sign an agreement with him in Khartoum with participation of senior leaderships of the SPLM, including Salva Kiir, Yasser Arman and Taban Deng. He was then lured to leave for Juba. After his arrival in Juba on April 9, 2009 he was appointed as a special envoy of the President of the Government of South Sudan for the Nuba Mountains. Kuku spent one year in the South. He was arrested on April 21, 2010 by the Intelligence of the SPLM when he decided to leave for the Nuba Mountains to carry out his duty due to reports attributed to Abdul-Aziz Al-hillo in order not to arrive in the Nuba Mountains through a recommendation of Salva Kiir
Talafon Kuku remained at the prisons of Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). He was charged of sabotage at the area. This accusation was changed to incitement among the citizens of the Nuba Mountains. This accusation with changed for the second time with a pretext that he was a military personality and speaking about politics
It is to be recalled that a national committee was formed since the arrest of Talafon Kuku in order to support him. This committee included representatives of a number of political parties and national and political personalities, including for example Mariam Al-Saddiq, Mekki Ali Balayel,Dr. Siddiq Tawer, Magboul Al-Toam and others, besides the Shura Councils of a number of tribes like Hawazma and Messairiya and the native administrations.

Lecturer of Public Law Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Mukaram: Detention of
Talafon Kuku Represents Flagrant Violation of Human Rights
Khartoum, Dec. 8 (SUNA)- The Lecturer of Public Law at Omdurman Islamic University, Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Mukaram, said that the detention of the citizen Talafon Kuku Abu-Jalaha, by the government of South Sudan represented a flagrant violation of the human rights and the International Law and necessitates adoption of a protesting stance to draw the attention of the world to this humanitarian issue
Dr. Abdul-Mukaram said that Talafon Kuku was arrested without directing any particular charge against him, therefore he should be tried before a just court or be released in accordance with the human rights charter.
He said that the government of South Sudan would resort to procrastination if it was pressured legally.
He underscored the importance of the political demands and protests so that the world became aware about the issue of his detention.
Dr. Abdul-Mukaram said that the governments of Sudan and South did not sign an agreement on exchange of prisoners, but they exchanged a number of prisoners after the referendum and establishment of the State of South Sudan, a matter that provides a precedent that can be repeated.
He said that the release of Talafon Kuku shall take place in a political framework, calling for protesting stances to be launched by the friends and the family of Talafon Kuku, adding that these protests are to be staged from the Embassy of South Sudan in Khartoum, and the offices of the United Nations, the European Union and other international organizations in Sudan.
It is to recalled that Talafon Kuku Abu-Jalaha remained detained by the Government of South Sudan since April 21, 2010, thus he spent 595 days in detention till today at the prisons of Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Juba town. Members of his family and advocates were unable to meet him. No charge was directed against him. He became an alien citizen in South Sudan since the separation of the south and establishment of the State of South Sudan. Talafon Kuku and other Sudanese detainees in the SPLM prisons in South Sudan State are now detained in a foreign country. Talafon Kuku is a leading figure of the Nuba Mountains.

Mekki Balayel: Detention of Talafon Kuku is Unjustifiable and Result of Conspiracy from Sudan People's Liberation Movement
Khartoum, Dec. 12 (SUNA) - Chairman of the Justice (the Origin), Mekki Ali Balayel, has described detention of Talafon Kuku by the government of South Sudan as conspiracy from the southerners and their agents in the Nuba Mountains after Talafon Kuku has directed sharp-worded criticism to Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and spoke about the injustice inflicted by Sudan People's Liberation Movement on the people of the Nuba Mountains.
He said that many persons of the Nuba Mountains like Talafon Kuku have been assassinated by the SPLM.
In a statement to SUNA, Balayel said that Talafon Kuku was one of the first founders of Sudan People's Liberation Movement in the Nuba Mountains and a supporter of the Nuba Mountains issues.
He said that Talafon Kuku has directed a sharp criticism to the SPLM after it deviated from its track and became a tool at the hand of the southerners for sake of realizing their own agenda.
Balayel said that Talafon Kuku has spoken much about the injustice inflicted by the SPLM on the citizens of the Nuba Mountains.
He indicated that during the past 10 years, before and after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (Naivasha), Talafon Kuku has launched a campaign through which he was able to inform the citizens of the Nuba Mountains on dimension of the exploitation and injustice inflicted on them by Sudan People's Liberation Movement.
He said that the protest against such injustice has disturbed the SPLM strategy toward the people of the Nuba Mountains, especially that the SPLM wanted the people of the Nuba Mountain fight alongside it even after the separation of south Sudan, referring to the participation of citizens of the Nuba Mountains in the recent incidents at Abyei area.
Balayel said that the agenda of the SPLM have coincided with those of some agents of the Nuba Mountains, especially the Communist elements, like Abdul-Aziz Al-Hillo, therefore Talafon Kuku became a persona non grata from the southerners, and detained unjustifiably and accused of plotting to stage a military coup, which was a false charge.
He said that all the accusations directed against Talafon Kuku were fabricated and unfounded, adding that the SPLM will continue to keep Talafon Kuku detained because it believes that his release will affect the proxy war which is being launched by the people of the Nuba Mountains on behalf of the southerners
Balayel stressed that Talafon Kuku is a northerner, and according to the International Law, he should be released or be referred to a just trial
He pointed to the effective role that can be played by the friends and family of Talafon Kuku, the human rights organizations and the local, regional and international civil society organizations for the release of Talafon Kuku.
Government receives memo from family of Talafon Kuku,demanding intervention for his release
Khartoum, Jan. 6 (SUNA) - The State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Salah Wanasi, affirmed that the government will spare no effort to achieve the release of Maj. Gen. Talefon Kuku, who remained in the detention centers of the State of South Sudan since April 2010, in a view that he is a Sudanese citizen who have rights, and that there is a human dimension in his case.
This came when the State Minister received at his office Wednesday the family of Maj. Gen. Talafon Kuku, which handed him a memo on his detention by the government of South Sudan State since April 2010, demanding direct intervention of the government of Sudan, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for his release and his return to his family.
Meanwhile, the Minister explained that releasing of Talafon Kuku by the government of South Sudan would be a good gesture and will push forward to the efforts to realize peace between the two countries.
He affirming that the government is keen to work for defending the rights of its people and protecting their interests wherever they are.
The representative of the family of the detainee, Kuwa Ibrahim Adlan, said that the continuous detention of Maj. Gen. Kuku is unjustifiable after separation of the South because he is a national of Sudan.
He affirmed that large efforts have been exerted to release him and that two memos were handed over to the United Nations which promised to contact the government of South Sudan State, saying that the family did not receive any reply in this connection.

Government Receives Memo of Kuku Family Demanding Intervention for his Release
Khartoum, Jan. 4 (SUNA)- The State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Salah Wansi, said that the government will exert every possible efforts for the release of Maj. Gen. Talafon Kuku who is detained in South Sudan State since April 2010 on ground that he is a Sudanese national and obtains rights and that his case has humanitarian dimension.
This came when he received at his office the family of Talafon Kuku who handed Wansi a memo on the detention of Talafon Kuku.
The family of Kuku demanded Sudan government to intervene through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for release of Talafon Kuku and returning him to his family.
Wansi said that the release of Talafon Kuku by South Sudan government will contribute to boosting the peace efforts between the two countries, affirming the government keenness to defend the rights and interests of its citizens.
Representative of the family of Kuku, Kuwa Ibrahimm Adlan, said that the continuity of his detention is unjustifiable after the separation of South Sudan because he became a Sudanese national, but a southerner.

Sudan Embassy to Juba Renews its Call for Visiting Talafon Koko
Khartoum, Jan. 27 (SUNA)- Sudan Charge d'Affairs to the State of South Sudan, Awad Al-Karim Al-Rayah, has renewed the call of Sudan Embassy for a permit to visit the Sudanese national Talafon Koko and to be informed on his health conditions and to follow up his legal rights.
This came during a meeting held Friday between Sudan Charge d'Affairs, Awad Al-Karim Al-Rayah and the General Director of the Consular Affairs at the Foreign Ministry of South Sudan, Ambassador John Akwej.
It is to be recalled that Sudan Embassy to Juba has conveyed to the Republic of South Sudan, through its Feign Ministry, the call of the family of Talafon Koko for his release or referring him to a fair trial.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry also raised the issue of Koko detention during the recent meeting of the delegation of the Foreign Ministry of South Sudan to Khartoum.

Civil Society Organizations Demand Release of Talafon Kuku
Khartoum, Sept. 18 (SUNA)- A number of Sudanese civil society organizations have delivered a memo of protest to the Embassy of the State of South Sudan and the United Nations on the detention of Talafon Kuku, the leading figure of the Nuba Mountain, who is arrested in detentions of the People's Movement in South Sudan.
The civil society organizations demanded the Embassy of South Sudan and the United Nations to intervene for release of Talafon Kuku, who is detained for more than 50 months, from South Sudan detentions .
The leading figure of the Nuba Mountains, Salah Beraima, said that Talafon Kuku, is detained in South Sudan without an accusation directed to him, calling on the United Nations and the human rights organizations to exert efforts for release of Kuku from prisons of South Sudan.
Beraima said that Talafon Kuku has suffered from effects of detentions of disease and denied a fair trial .
He said that Kuku was supposed to be set free from detention after the separation of South Sudan especially that his detention contravenes with the international principles of human rights and the international charters that protects freedoms and people dignity.
He called for release of Talafon Kuku and delivering him to the Red Cross to guarantee his arrival . safely .
