Minister of Finance calls for addressing of Sudan external debt after its meeting of debt relief conditions
Khartoum, August 8 (SUNA) - The Minister of Finance and National Economy, Ali Mahmoud, has appealed for the international community to treat Sudan the same as the rest of the other countries in the treatment of its foreign debt and to not to include the political factors in the debt issues. The call found support from some African countries.
This came during his participation in the meetings of African Ministers of Finance, Governors of the Breton Woods group, which was held in Kinshasa during the period 1st and 2nd of the current August.
The minister called for the need to enshrine the memorandum on external debts of some African countries that have met all technical requirements needed to stage of decision in the framework of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC).
The Minister of Finance presented the case of Sudan focusing on what has been achieved from the economic reform program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in which Sudan has made successes for a period of time exceeded ten years, referring to the program applied by the Sudan during the said period and gained the IMF praise. That is alongside the peace agreement, completion of the document on poverty combating and the five-year plan. In addition to the debt agreement with the creditors at a rate exceeded 90%, which exceeds the required rate of 70%.
The minister said that the program of the meetings included four items included comprehensive development and job creation, implications of the European debt crisis, support of Breton Woods to the African continent and financing of infrastructure projects and representation of the African Group in the World Bank and IMF.
The Minister of Finance of the Democratic Republic of Congo has chaired the meetings of the current session of the group of finance ministers and governors at the World Bank and IMF which expires by the advent of the annual meetings of the Breton Woods group during next October.
