Khartoum, April 6 (SUNA) - The African Union (AU) has called for the lifting of economic sanctions imposed on Sudan and Zimbabwe to help tackling the new corona pandemic and to facilitate the response operations, considering continuation of these sanctions as the inhumane and intolerable under the current circumstances.

This came in a digital conference that included the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, the Director of the African Epidemiology Center, Dr. John Nkengasong, and a number of African heads of state, who discussed the AU plan to address the Corona pandemic.

Meanwhile, Moussa Faki gave a briefing at the conference on the steps taken by the African Union based on the recommendations of the previous meetings.

The General Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanum Gebresus, has given a review in which he stressed the need for rapid movement, testing, and delivery of medical examination equipment and medical personal protective equipment.

The leaders underscored that the coronavirus pandemic is an unprecedented one and necessitates cooperation between countries in the fields of health and transport to draw up a continental strategy in this regard.

They also affirmed the importance of mobilizing international support from international financial institutions, the international partners and friendly countries to confront the economic and social impacts of the epidemic.
