Washington August,7 (dpa) - A request from President Donald Trump's re-election campaign to add an additional televised debate against his rival, Joe Biden, was rejected on Thursday.

Trump's campaign had argued the first debate will not take place until after some voters start to receive their mail-in ballots early next month, effectively cutting them off from hearing the candidates go head-to-head on policy issues.

The Commission on Presidential Debates responded that voters are not obligated to cast their ballots before the first debate on September 29, even if they receive the paper earlier, effectively nullifying the argument.

"The Commission has found that three 90-minute debates work well to fulfil the voter education purposes the debates are intended to serve," the body added in its statement.

Trump, a Republican, is is trailing Biden, a Democrat and the former vice president, in the polls ahead of the November election.

It is unusual that an incumbent would seek an extra face-off against a rival.
