Humanitarian Aid Commissioner inspects refugee flows in Kassala State

 Kassala, Nov. 19 (SUNA) - The Commissioner of Humanitarian Aid in Kassala State, Idris Ali Mohamed, has paid an inspection visit to Hamdayat border crossing, during which he got acquainted with influx of Ethiopian refugees fleeing fighting in their country.

The Commissioner, accompanied by representatives of a number of voluntary organizations, heard a detailed report on the volume of the continuous flows of refugees across the border.

The representative of the refugee housing, Yagub Mohamed Yagub, explained that the average daily entry for refugees ranges between 550 to 600 persons.

He said that the number of currently registered refugees has reached 16,605 persons.

He revealed the urgent need for shelter and food materials, calling on all humanitarian agencies to urgently intervene to meet the requirements of the refugees, affirming that they are working to transport the refugees to Um Rakuba camp.

For his part, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid affirmed that the commission will endeavor in coordination with all voluntary and humanitarian organizations to meet the needs of the refugees.

He said that the visit comes within the framework of assessing the situation on the ground and identifying urgent needs.

He called on the international community and voluntary organizations to respond urgently and to provide shelter materials and food for the refugees.
