Kassala, Feb. 20 (SU NA) - The Secretary-General of the Kassala State Government and caretaker Wali (governor), Al-Tayeb Mohamed Al-Sheikh, Saturday received a delegation of the United States Embassy in Khartoum, which is currently visiting the state headed by the Official of the Political Department of the embassy, accompanied by the First Secretary of Norway Embassy in Khartoum.

He gave a comprehensive briefing on the state’s reception of large numbers of Ethiopian refugees through the Hamdayit crossing, as well as the security, social, health and service challenges facing the state and the implications for service facilities and the local community.

He indicated that the number of the Ethiopian refugees reached 62,000 since the outbreak of the dispute in Tigray region early last November. Explaining that 23,000 refugees were transported to the refugees camps in Gedarif State.

He described the conditions of refugees in Hamdayit area as extremely difficult; a matter which needs urgent interventions from the United Nations and international, especially that Hamdayit camp is concerned only with the reception and registration work.

On his part, the head of the US Embassy delegation expressed his appreciation of the role that Kassala State plays in receiving and hosting refugees, referring to their field visit to the Hamdayit area to inspect the conditions and services needs that are presented to the refugees and the local community.
