Khartoum, June 22 (SUNA) – Member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Dr. Abdul-Bagi Abdul-Gadir Al-Zubair, has stressed the importance of strengthening the regional and international cooperation for the combat of drugs.

Addressing on Wednesday the Scientific Workshop on Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in cooperation with the National Committee for Narcotics Control and the General Administration for Drugs Control, Abdul-Bagi affirmed the government keenness to combat drugs and to reduce their spread and use as they constitute a major threat to Sudanese society.

The member of the Sovereignty Council called for giving attention to the youth as they are the main pillar of the country's development and progress, and to reactivate the role of youth centers and to work to combat unemployment and to educate young people about the dangers of drugs, noting that the family bears the greatest burden in the control of drugs.

He touched on the great role being played by the competent authorities in the combat of the negative phenomena and the monitoring of borders and ports to curb the drug trade, given that Sudan is a transit country.

Meanwhile, the Director of the General Administration for Drug Control, Maj. Gen. (police) Sami Hamid Ahmed Huraiz, said that the spread of the drug phenomenon poses a major challenge to the government, a matter which requires concerted efforts of all the competent authorities to combat it and to educate the community about its dangers and harms.

The workshop was addressed by the Chairman of the National Committee for Combat of Narcotics, Dr. Al-Gizouli Dafa’alla, the Director the Public Relations Administration at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Siddiq Al-Bushra.
