Khartoum, July 26 (SUNA) - Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has directed speeding up formation of a coordination mechanism for the implementation of the Sudan’s Initiative for Arab Food Security, provided that coordination of its work on the part of the League, is assumed by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, with the participation of the relevant Arab bodies, in preparation for presenting the results of its work to the upcoming Arab summit in Algeria.

This came when he met  at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States with Dr. Gabriel Ibrahim, the Sudanese Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, who headed the Sudanese delegation at the meeting of the special session of the Economic and Social Council of the Arab League, and in the presence of Dr. Abu Bakr Omer Al-Bushra, acting Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

The meeting was also attended by Prof. Ibrahim Adam Ahmed Al-Dukhairi, Director General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development.

The meeting dealt with putting forward an urgent project to support the cultivation of one million feddans of wheat in the next winter season, provided that a separate revolving fund will be established to meet the season’s inputs.

An integrated presentation was also made on the food security situation in the Arab region in light of the high food prices due to the current international political situation, drought disasters and climate change.

His Excellency the Secretary-General of the Arab League praised the efforts made to implement the Sudan Food Security Initiative.

The General Secretariat of the Arab League promised an urgent donation of 500 thousand dollars to the revolving fund, and the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment promised 500 thousand dollars as well, while the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development donated 200 thousand dollars as a down payment.

 For his part, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry expressed readiness of the Republic of Sudan to submit adequate studies to complete the implementation of the Arab Food Security Initiative, which was previously launched by Sudan in 2013 and approved by the Arab Development Summit at the time, as well as the initiative to cultivate one million feddans in the current rainy season to urgently respond to the critical food situation.

At the end of the meeting, His Excellency the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, valued the stances of the League of Arab States in support of peace, stability and development in Sudan, and stressed Sudan's keenness to boost coordination with the Arab League to promote joint Arab action.
